Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lake County has kicked off our End of Year Campaign. Our goal is to raise $150,000 to fund our mentoring programs that serve over 800 children throughout Lake County every year. Below is a letter from Fontel Mines, former Little Brother and current tight end for the Chicago Bears:
"I’m tight end Fontel Mines, #89 for your Chicago Bears. Before I was enrolled in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, I struggled adjusting to life in a single parent home. My mother did a wonderful job raising me but I still knew something was missing, and that was the influence of a
positive male figure. Shortly after my 10th birthday, I was matched with my Big Brother Chris Collier. Chris was much like me because he felt a part of his life was empty. Although he was happily married, he and his wife had no children. So in a way, we both filled a void in each other’s life.
Chris and I enjoyed our time together as he taught me numerous things, from changing the oil in a car to basic Algebra. Our times together were priceless. He became a member of my family as I did his.
I’ve spent 23 years of my life without knowing or meeting my father, but I can proudly say my Big Brother, Chris Collier, is the closest I’ll ever come to that. Chris and I enjoyed many activities together such as basketball, movies, golf, bowling, and last but not least, a child’s favorite…homework!
Thirteen years later, he is still married but now with three beautiful children. We are and always will be, best friends. I attribute a lot of my success and focus to the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program."
